Simple Wellness Practices to Help You Survive this Winter (Polar Vortex)

Winter can be an especially difficult time to practice wellness. The days are short, there is snow everywhere, and you always feel cold. Who wants to take the time to meditate, workout, or cook when you have to get up 30 minutes early just to defrost your car in the dark? It’s no wonder so many people fight depression this time of year! Since those winter blues are very real, it means practicing wellness during the winter is even more important. Here’s four ways you can practice wellness during the winter.

1. Get Your Clean On

We cannot emphasize this enough – wash your hands and keep your bathroom and kitchen tidy and sanitized. This time of the year is also known as flu season but there are plenty of other nasty viruses around. If you are okay with vaccinations, then get a flu shot. Whether you vaccinate or not, make sure you keep yourself and your areas as clean as possible. It’s the best way to defend against germs! Winter can also bring allergies, so keep your sheets clean and vacuum regularly.

2. Stay Moisturized

Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. When you combine that with frequent hand-washing, then you have a recipe for dry, cracked hands. Keep lotion around at all times, so you can keep your hands moisturized. In addition to lotion, consider using oil for both your face and body. This can be a great way to lock in moisture. You can also use the practice of massaging oil into your skin as a way to relax and practice mindfulness. If you find yourself turning your thermostat higher and higher, then consider using a humidifier to bring some moisture back into the air. Another great way to stay moisturized? Make sure to drink plenty of water!

3. Don’t Hibernate

Going outside for a walk or run might be impossible right now. But if you can swing going outside for a workout, then do it. It’s great for your health, to breathe fresh air and get some much-needed Vitamin D. However, don’t stay out so long that you can’t keep warm. Be sure to dress warmly with layers so you can take off or add clothing as needed. If you can’t go outside, then workout at home. Winter is a perfect time to do yoga because it will help you feel better mentally and physically. You can also do body-weight exercises that involve high intensity interval training (HIIT). These short sessions will keep you in shape and get the blood flowing!

4. Find Healthy Winter Foods

Keep up with your healthy eating by adding root vegetables to your menu. You can make hearty stews, soups, and chilies that will keep you warm and can be nutritious. It’s tempting to fill up on comfort food when it’s dark and cold, but make the effort to stay on track in the kitchen. On the days when you want to veg out with the TV, choose healthy snacks like fruit and nuts. You can also stay warm by drinking herbal tea instead of drinking hot chocolate or flavored coffees.

Winter is hard on everyone. By following the four tips above, you can make your winter more bearable. You’ll also be in better shape when springtime comes! Your body and mind will be ready to take on whatever adventures await you.
